Can I change my weekly reset day or move my 5-hour window?

by vortwangUpdated

No. Neither vendor offers a setting. Anthropic: 'The weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account. Your reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins.' OpenAI: the weekly date moves only as a side effect of a reset, since a full banked reset 'changes your weekly reset date' and a purchased one schedules the next '7 days after that first request'.

What the official docs say

How it is counted

Claude's weekly clock is fixed by Anthropic. The Max plan article: 'The weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account. Your reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins, and you receive your full weekly allowance each cycle. You can see your next reset time in Settings > Usage.' A configurable reset day is an open feature request in the official repository (anthropics/claude-code #90579, 2026-08-29), not a setting. The 5-hour session limit 'will reset every five hours'; there is no control to move it.

Codex's weekly clock is per account and is moved only by resets. 'A new window starts when you send your first message in Work or Codex after the previous window ends' describes the five-hour window; you cannot schedule it. The weekly date changes in two documented cases: 'Using a full banked reset refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date', and after a purchased reset 'Your next automatic weekly reset is scheduled 7 days after that first request.' Both cost you something: a banked reset is a consumable that expires, and a purchased reset 'cannot be saved for later' and generally is not refunded.

So the only lever is timing your first request after a reset, and only on Codex. Since a purchased reset's new period 'starts with your first request in Work or Codex after the reset is applied, regardless of whether you have any remaining usage', the day you send that first request becomes your new weekly anchor. That is a consequence of buying a reset, not a scheduling feature, and this site does not recommend spending money to shift a date.

FAQ

Is there a setting in Claude Code or the Claude app to choose the reset day?

No. Anthropic assigns the weekly reset time to your account and says it stays the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins. Issue #90579 in the official Claude Code repository asks for a configurable day and was open as of 2026-09-18. Your next reset time is shown in Settings > Usage and in /usage.

Does re-subscribing or upgrading move my Claude weekly reset day?

Anthropic's wording covers subscription start: the reset day and time 'stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins'. Nothing published says an upgrade re-assigns the time; check Settings > Usage after any plan change rather than assuming.

Can I shift my Codex weekly date without paying?

Only by redeeming a banked reset you already hold, which 'changes your weekly reset date' as a side effect and consumes the reset. There is no free scheduling control, and a global reset announced by OpenAI is not documented as changing the date either.
