Does a global Codex reset move my weekly reset date?
by vortwangUpdated
OpenAI has not published this. The help center says only that 'An automatic or global reset refreshes the eligible usage limits specified in the announcement', with no word about the weekly date. By contrast a full banked reset 'changes your weekly reset date', and after a purchased reset the next automatic weekly reset 'is scheduled 7 days after that first request'. User reports after the 2026-09-07 reset and the 2026-09-09 incident disagree, so trust Settings → Usage.
What the official docs say
An automatic or global reset refreshes the eligible usage limits specified in the announcement.

Quoted from OpenAI Help Center: Managing usage with GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex (article 20001516, read via Wayback snapshot dated 2026-09-16) Using a full banked reset refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date.

How it is counted
Two of the three reset kinds have a documented effect on your weekly clock. Banked: 'Using a full banked reset refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date.' Purchased: 'Your new weekly usage period starts with your first request in Work or Codex after the reset is applied, regardless of whether you have any remaining usage. Your next automatic weekly reset is scheduled 7 days after that first request.'
The third kind is the one this board tracks, and its sentence is shorter: 'An automatic or global reset refreshes the eligible usage limits specified in the announcement. You don't need to apply it yourself, and it won't appear as a saved reset in Settings.' Nothing in the help center says whether the weekly reset date stays where it was or is re-anchored. This site does not fill that gap with a guess.
User reports in the official Codex repository point both ways. After the 2026-09-07 global reset, issue #44201 says the weekly timestamp 'appears to have remained on the pre-global-reset schedule'. After the 2026-09-09 incident (status page: 'Some Codex users may be experiencing unexpected usage limit resets', 17:29–17:54 UTC; Tibo Sottiaux: some banked resets 'not fully applying'), issues #45236 and #44443 report reset dates moving later with no reset used. These are observations, not rules; the date shown in Settings → Usage for your own account is the only authoritative one.
| Kind of reset | Does it change your weekly reset date? | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Banked reset (you redeem it) | Yes. "Using a full banked reset refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date." | [2] |
| Purchased instant reset | Yes. "Your next automatic weekly reset is scheduled 7 days after that first request." | [3] |
| Global / automatic reset (what this board tracks) | Not published. OpenAI says only that it "refreshes the eligible usage limits specified in the announcement". User reports: unchanged after 2026-09-07 (#44201); moved later after the 2026-09-09 incident (#45236, #44443) | [1] [6] [7] [8] |
FAQ
My weekly reset date jumped later after a global reset. Is that documented?
No. OpenAI's help center describes what a global reset refreshes but not what it does to the weekly date. Users reported later dates after the 2026-09-09 incident (issues #45236 and #44443), and one reported no change after the 2026-09-07 global reset (#44201). If your date moved with no banked or purchased reset used, the help center says to contact Support with the date, time and time zone and a screenshot of your Usage page.
Should I hold my banked reset in case a global reset is coming?
OpenAI does not announce global resets in advance, so there is nothing to time against. A banked reset 'is consumed only when it successfully refreshes at least one eligible usage window', so it survives a global reset unused; but it also expires on its own date. Issue #43694 asks OpenAI to grant global resets as banked ones for exactly this reason; that is a request, not policy.
How do I see my current weekly reset date?
Open Settings → Usage in the ChatGPT desktop app or on web, or type /status inside an active Codex CLI session; the "Weekly limit" line prints the reset time. After any reset the dashboard "may take a short time to update", so refresh or reopen it before comparing dates.
