Codex usage limits
Updated
OpenAI publishes only five-hour estimates for Codex: on Plus, 5–45 GPT-6 Astra local messages per five-hour period, with Pro 5x, Pro 20x and Business columns on the same table. No plan has a published weekly number; the pricing page says weekly limits "may also apply". Free and Go have no per-window estimate. The last account-wide Codex reset on this board was announced Sep 12, 2026.

How the windows work
Codex meters a subscription in two windows. OpenAI’s help center: "Depending on your plan, usage limits may apply over a five-hour window and a weekly window." Where both apply you need allowance remaining in both, so clearing the five-hour window does not refill the weekly one. Local CLI and IDE messages, cloud chats and ChatGPT Work draw from one shared allowance, and "Switching models does not restore allowance in a shared usage pool."
The five-hour limit has not been constant. Tibo Sottiaux removed it for Plus, Business and Pro on 2026-07-12, then wrote on 2026-08-25 (01:16 UTC) that it would return for Plus accounts "tomorrow" while staying "not enabled for Pro $100 and Pro $200 subscriptions" for the upcoming months. The weekly window runs on a per-account clock: after a purchased reset, "your next automatic weekly reset is seven days after that request".
The estimates in the table "are not fixed message limits"; OpenAI says to "check your usage dashboard for current limits and reset times". Inside the CLI, /status shows both windows and their reset times, and /usage opens the usage menu where an earned banked reset can be redeemed. "Using a full banked reset refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date."
Over the last 10 resets the gap between resets ranged from 1.2 to 11 days; there is no fixed schedule.

FAQ
Does the Codex 5-hour limit apply to Pro plans right now?
Not according to the latest official statement on record. On 2026-07-12 Tibo Sottiaux temporarily removed the 5-hour limit for Plus, Business and Pro; on 2026-08-25 he wrote it would return for Plus the next day while staying "not enabled for Pro $100 and Pro $200 subscriptions" for the upcoming months. The Pro rows in the table are OpenAI’s published per-five-hour estimates, and the weekly limit still applies.
What is the Codex weekly limit?
OpenAI has not published a number for any plan. The pricing page says "Weekly limits may also apply", and the help center explains the clock: your new weekly period starts with your first Work or Codex request after a reset, and the next automatic weekly reset is seven days after that request. Your own reset time is shown in Settings → Usage, on the usage dashboard, or by /status in the CLI.
Do banked resets or purchased resets change these limits?
No. A banked reset is "a one-time Codex usage-limit reset saved to your account until you use it or it expires"; it "does not permanently increase your plan's usage limit". A purchased instant reset refreshes the five-hour and weekly allowance as soon as checkout succeeds and "cannot be saved for later". Neither raises the numbers in the table; they only refill the windows once.
Where do these numbers come from?
Every row links to the OpenAI page it was read from, with the date it was verified. Five-hour estimates come from the Codex pricing page and the help-center article on GPT-6 Astra; plan changes come from Tibo Sottiaux’s posts, the ChatGPT changelog and the help center. Cells OpenAI has not published are marked "Not published"; this site does not estimate them.
