"5h limit: [████████████████░░░░] 82% left (resets 22:41) Weekly limit: [███████████████████░] 97% left (resets 17:41 on 1 Jul)"
Updated
The "5h limit" and "Weekly limit" lines are the two usage bars Codex CLI prints when you type /status inside a session: the first shows how much of your 5-hour window is left and the clock time it refreshes, the second your weekly limit and its refresh date and time. Both run on your account's own clock; they are not the account-wide reset this board tracks. The last official Codex reset on record was Sep 12, 2026, 08:09 UTC.

What does "5h limit: [████████████████░░░░] 82% left (resets 22:41) Weekly limit: [███████████████████░] 97% left (resets 17:41 on 1 Jul)" mean?
Typing /status in an active Codex CLI session prints a box with the model, directory, permissions, account and session id, then two bars: "5h limit" with a percentage left and a "resets HH:MM" clock time, and "Weekly limit" with a percentage left and a "resets HH:MM on D Mon" date. OpenAI's help center names this as the way to check: "In an active Codex CLI session, enter /status."
The two lines are the two windows OpenAI meters, "a five-hour window and a weekly window"; you need allowance in both to keep working, and you can hit the five-hour bar before five hours have passed. The box header adds "Visit https://chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage for up-to-date information on rate limits and credits". Some accounts show a third "premium limit" row (issue #30349).
The source box (openai/codex issue #29948, CLI 0.142.0) is also a reminder that the bars and the limit notice can disagree: the same session was blocked with "You've hit your usage limit" while showing 82% and 97% left, which OpenAI labelled bug / rate-limits.
Which window is full?
| Window | Resets | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| 5-hour window | Five hours after the first message that opened the window, per account. OpenAI: "You may reach the five-hour limit before five hours have passed, even if you still have weekly usage remaining." Removed for Plus, Business and Pro on 2026-07-12; back for Plus since 2026-08-25 (the post says "Tomorrow" and is stamped 2026-08-25 01:16 UTC, i.e. Pacific time 2026-08-25); "not enabled for Pro $100 and Pro $200 subscriptions" for the upcoming months. | /status inside an active Codex CLI session (the "5h limit" line); Settings → Usage in the app; chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage |
| Weekly limit | Once a week on your account's own date. OpenAI publishes no weekly figure ("Weekly limits may also apply"). A full banked reset "changes your weekly reset date"; after a purchased reset the next automatic weekly reset is seven days after your first request. | /status (the "Weekly limit" line); Settings → Usage; chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage |
What to do when you see it
- Type /status inside the session
Start codex, then type /status at the prompt (not "codex /status" in the shell). The docs describe it as "Display session configuration and token usage."
- Read the two reset values
The time after "resets" on the 5h line is when your 5-hour window refreshes; the "resets HH:MM on D Mon" on the Weekly line is your weekly refresh. OpenAI does not say which time zone the clock uses, so compare it with chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage if in doubt.
- Put the times on a countdown
Paste each reset time into the window tracker to get a countdown and a calendar file for your own windows. /usage, the other command, lets you "View account token usage or use a rate-limit reset" if you hold a banked one.
- Report bars with room that still block you
If both bars show allowance and Codex still says you have hit your limit, that is the bug in issues #29948 and #30349: file an issue at github.com/openai/codex with the /status box, or contact OpenAI Support with the reset time shown and your time zone.
When does it reset?
Your own windows: exactly what the two lines say. The 5-hour bar refills at the "resets" time on its line; the weekly bar refills at the date and time on its line, and a full banked reset or a purchased reset moves that date. Paste the times into the window tracker for a countdown.
Account-wide resets: when OpenAI announces a reset for everyone it "is applied directly to the usage limits covered by the announcement", so both bars jump without you doing anything. Those announcements are what the board row above and the Codex history page record; they are not scheduled.

FAQ
Is the time after "resets" in my local time zone?
OpenAI's documentation does not say. The box in issue #29948 shows plain clock times ("resets 22:41", "resets 17:41 on 1 Jul") with no zone. Compare them with the reset time on chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage, which the box itself points to.
What is the difference between /status and /usage?
Per the Codex CLI docs, "/status — Display session configuration and token usage" prints the box with the two limit bars, while "/usage — View account token usage or use a rate-limit reset" opens a menu to inspect token activity or redeem an available banked reset.
Why was I blocked with 82% left?
The box in issue #29948 was captured right before "You've hit your usage limit. Upgrade to Plus …" appeared on a Business account, and #30349 shows the same at 99%/100% on Plus; OpenAI labelled both bug / rate-limits. When the bars have room and you are still blocked, report it rather than waiting.
Does a global Codex reset change these bars?
Yes, immediately: an announced reset "is applied directly to the usage limits covered by the announcement" and "won't appear as a saved reset". Check the board row above for the last reset on record.
