What is a banked reset?
Updated
A banked reset is, in OpenAI's words, "a one-time Codex usage-limit reset saved to your account until you use it or it expires. It is not purchased credit and does not permanently increase your plan's usage limit." You redeem it yourself from Settings → Usage or with /usage in the CLI; a full one refreshes both the 5-hour and weekly windows and changes your weekly reset date. It is usable for 30 days after it is granted.

Definition
Reset banking was added on 2026-06-11: the Codex changelog lists "rate-limit reset banking for Plus and Pro users, including one free reset at launch and referral invitations for earning more during the current promotion." Banked resets are promotional; OpenAI Support says they "aren't something you can normally purchase."
A banked reset "must be applied by you", and it "is consumed only when it successfully refreshes at least one eligible usage window. If there is nothing to reset, it remains available." A global reset is the opposite: applied by OpenAI to everyone, and it "won't appear as a saved reset in Settings." A purchased instant reset applies at checkout and "cannot be saved for later."
"Banked rate-limit resets are usable for 30 days after they're granted", and "Once an unused reset expires, it cannot be restored or reissued." More than one can sit in an account: on 2026-06-28 Tibo Sottiaux noted "some users had stacked up to three banked resets already". Redemption from web and mobile arrived on 2026-07-12; before that only the desktop app could redeem.
On the board, a banked-reset drop is a signal of kind "banked": the STATUS flap reads BANKED for 72 hours after the announcement, and the alert channels say "banked reset card" rather than "reset announced". It does not move LAST RESET or NEXT EST., because those count only account-wide resets. Redeeming your own card is something you do in your account; the board cannot see it.
Where you’ll see it on the board
The STATUS column on the departures board uses five words. Each one is a fixed rule of this site, computed from the announcements on record, not a promise about the next reset.
| Status word | What it means |
|---|---|
| RESET NOW | An account-wide reset was announced in the last 24 hours. |
| BANKED | The latest signal is a banked reset card you redeem yourself. |
| TEASE | A reset has been teased but has not taken effect yet. |
| WAITING | Normal waiting. Nothing announced since the last reset. |
| OVERDUE | The gap since the last reset is past 1.5x the recent median. |
FAQ
Do banked resets expire?
Yes. The pricing page: "Banked rate-limit resets are usable for 30 days after they're granted." The help center adds that expiration can vary by offer, and "Once an unused reset expires, it cannot be restored or reissued." Check the expiration shown in your account.
Can I buy a banked reset?
No. OpenAI Support: "Banked resets are promotional Codex rate-limit resets, they aren't something you can normally purchase." What OpenAI does sell to eligible personal Plus and Pro accounts is an instant reset that applies at checkout and "cannot be saved for later."
Does using one change my weekly countdown?
Yes. "Using a full banked reset refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date. Check Settings → Usage for your updated reset time."
Do Claude Code or Grok have banked resets?
As of 2026-09-17, only OpenAI has published a help-center article on banked resets. The Anthropic and xAI documents linked from the other glossary pages describe windows that refresh on their own and account-wide resets, not a saved reset you redeem.
