What is a reset?

Updated

A reset, on this board, is an account-wide usage-limit reset that a vendor announces and applies to everyone at once. OpenAI describes it: "An automatic or global reset refreshes the eligible usage limits specified in the announcement. You don't need to apply it yourself, and it won't appear as a saved reset in Settings." One documented Codex example is the global reset of 2026-09-07. It is not your own window refreshing.

What the official docs say

Definition

The word "reset" gets used for three different things. Your 5-hour window and weekly limit refresh on their own clock, per account; that is a window roll-over, and the time is shown by /status (Codex), /usage (Claude Code) or Settings → Usage (Grok). A banked reset is a saved card you redeem yourself. A reset in the sense this site tracks is a public announcement that the vendor has refreshed limits for a whole population of accounts.

Announcements come from named official accounts or vendor help pages, and every row on the board links to the original. Two examples: OpenAI's help center documents a global automatic reset of Plus, Pro and Business limits on 2026-09-07, applied immediately and not saved as a banked reset; on 2026-08-26 Grok Bot's @bot account posted "We're also resetting weekly usage limits for all users."

A global reset does not change how the windows behave afterwards. OpenAI notes that after a reset "you can reach the five-hour limit while you still have weekly usage remaining." A banked reset you were holding is untouched: a global reset "won't appear as a saved reset in Settings" and does not consume the one already there.

On the board, a reset announced within the last 24 hours shows as RESET NOW; afterwards the row returns to WAITING. LAST RESET is the most recent announcement of this kind, and NEXT EST. adds the median gap of the last 10 resets to it: a cadence estimate, not a promise. OVERDUE means the wait has passed 1.5 times that median. BANKED and TEASE describe other signals, not resets. These rules are the site's own and are exposed in the public status API.

Where you’ll see it on the board

The STATUS column on the departures board uses five words. Each one is a fixed rule of this site, computed from the announcements on record, not a promise about the next reset.

Status wordWhat it means
RESET NOWAn account-wide reset was announced in the last 24 hours.
BANKEDThe latest signal is a banked reset card you redeem yourself.
TEASEA reset has been teased but has not taken effect yet.
WAITINGNormal waiting. Nothing announced since the last reset.
OVERDUEThe gap since the last reset is past 1.5x the recent median.

FAQ

Is a reset the same as my 5-hour window refreshing?

No. Your window refreshes on your own clock, per account, whether or not anyone announces anything; Codex shows that time in /status and Claude Code in /usage. A reset on this board is an announcement that limits were refreshed for everyone, and it is dated by the announcement.

Who announces resets?

The official accounts this board watches: @thsottiaux for Codex, @ClaudeDevs and @lydiahallie for Claude, and @grok, @bot and @elonmusk for Grok, plus vendor help pages when they document one. Each row shows the announcing account and links to the post; the public status API returns the same fields.

Are resets on a schedule?

No. None of the three vendors announces resets in advance. NEXT EST. is the last reset plus the median gap of the last 10 resets on record; the limits page and the time-zone pages also print the real range of recent gaps, which is wide.

Does a global reset use up my banked reset?

No. "An automatic or global reset refreshes the eligible usage limits specified in the announcement. You don't need to apply it yourself, and it won't appear as a saved reset in Settings." A banked reset is consumed only when you apply it and it refreshes a window.
