What does "You have a new rate limit reset available — You were granted a rate limit reset that will expire in 30 days." mean?
The banner announces a banked reset. OpenAI defines it as "a one-time Codex usage-limit reset saved to your account until you use it or it expires. It is not purchased credit and does not permanently increase your plan's usage limit." Banked resets are promotional: launch rewards or successful referrals, not something you can normally buy.
Nothing happens until you redeem it. A banked reset "must be applied by you"; when you do, "Using a full banked reset refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date." It "is consumed only when it successfully refreshes at least one eligible usage window", and it expires: the Codex pricing page says banked resets "are usable for 30 days after they're granted".
In the source report (openai/codex issue #37396, 2026-08-07, Codex app 26.803.41515 on macOS) a Pro user saw this banner while the usage panel kept showing 1 available reset instead of 2, and the count went from 1 to 0 after redeeming, so the granted reset never landed. OpenAI does not replace resets that were "not applied as described" without investigating, so report a missing one.

What to do when you see it
- Confirm the count
Open the profile menu and look at the usage summary, or open Settings → Usage in the desktop app, web or CLI. OpenAI: "select the usage summary showing the available reset count, such as 1 reset available." If the count did not change after the banner, that is the issue #37396 bug.
- Redeem it when it will refresh something
Pick "1 reset available" or "Full reset", "Review the expiration details, then confirm that you want to use it." A full reset refreshes both windows and moves your weekly reset date; if there is nothing to reset, it stays available. In the CLI, /usage lets you "redeem an available earned reset".
- Watch the expiry
Banked resets are usable for 30 days after they are granted, and "Once an unused reset expires, it cannot be restored or reissued." Support does not offer replacements for resets you let expire.
- Report a reset that never arrived
If the banner appeared but the count is unchanged, contact OpenAI Support so it can review eligibility, or file an issue at github.com/openai/codex with screenshots of the banner and the usage panel. "Reporting an issue alone does not qualify you for an additional reset or compensation."
When does it reset?
Your own windows: this banner does not reset anything by itself. When you redeem the banked reset, your 5-hour and weekly windows refresh immediately and Settings → Usage shows the new weekly reset date; the dashboard "may take a short time to update". Until then the windows keep their normal clocks, which /status shows.
Account-wide resets: a banked reset is different from the announced resets on this board. OpenAI: an automatic or global reset "does not create a saved reset"; it is applied to everyone at once. The board row above shows the last such reset on record; the Codex history page lists every announcement, including the banked-reset drops of 2026-09-03 and 2026-09-04.

Do I have to use the reset right away?
No, but within 30 days: "Banked rate-limit resets are usable for 30 days after they're granted." OpenAI also says expiration can vary by offer, so check the date shown in your account. Tibo Sottiaux noted some users "had stacked up to three banked resets".
What exactly does a full banked reset refresh?
"Using a full banked reset refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date." It is consumed only if at least one window is actually refreshed; otherwise it remains available.
The banner appeared but my available-reset count did not change. Why?
That is the bug in issue #37396: a Pro user saw the banner, the panel stayed at 1 available, and redeeming took it to 0. Contact OpenAI Support with screenshots so eligibility can be reviewed; the help center says Support "can review eligibility" but does not reissue resets on request alone.
Can I redeem it from the CLI or on mobile?
Yes. In Codex CLI, "/usage — View account token usage or use a rate-limit reset"; on 2026-07-12 Tibo Sottiaux announced "the ability to use a banked reset from web and mobile", where before it was desktop-app only.
