"You've hit your usage limit. Upgrade your plan or add credits to continue, or try again at {Mon D, YYYY, H:MM AM}."
Updated
"You've hit your usage limit. Upgrade your plan or add credits to continue, or try again at {Mon D, YYYY, H:MM AM}." is Codex's message when one of your two windows, the 5-hour window or the weekly limit, is used up. It refreshes on its own clock, shown by /status and Settings → Usage; it is not the account-wide reset this board tracks. The last official Codex reset on record was Sep 12, 2026, 08:09 UTC (source linked in the board row).

What does "You've hit your usage limit. Upgrade your plan or add credits to continue, or try again at {Mon D, YYYY, H:MM AM}." mean?
This is the current Codex limit notice for personal ChatGPT plans, seen in the desktop app and in the same wording family in the CLI and IDE extension. OpenAI meters Codex over two windows, "a five-hour window and a weekly window", and the time after "try again at" is when the exhausted window refreshes for your account.
The three options in the sentence are the ones OpenAI's help center lists: "You may be able to add credits, use an available reset, upgrade, or wait until the displayed reset time." Eligible Plus and Pro users can buy credits without changing plans.
The source report (openai/codex issue #34360, 2026-07-20) came from a Pro user on Codex app 26.715.52143 for Windows: the app showed 99% remaining, and redeeming a banked weekly reset only replaced the timestamp with a new one (Jul 27, 2026, 10:26 AM). OpenAI labelled it bug / rate-limits, so the message can appear while your own bars still show room.
Which window is full?
| Window | Resets | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| 5-hour window | Five hours after the first message that opened the window, per account. OpenAI: "You may reach the five-hour limit before five hours have passed, even if you still have weekly usage remaining." Removed for Plus, Business and Pro on 2026-07-12; back for Plus since 2026-08-25 (the post says "Tomorrow" and is stamped 2026-08-25 01:16 UTC, i.e. Pacific time 2026-08-25); "not enabled for Pro $100 and Pro $200 subscriptions" for the upcoming months. | /status inside an active Codex CLI session (the "5h limit" line); Settings → Usage in the app; chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage |
| Weekly limit | Once a week on your account's own date. OpenAI publishes no weekly figure ("Weekly limits may also apply"). A full banked reset "changes your weekly reset date"; after a purchased reset the next automatic weekly reset is seven days after your first request. | /status (the "Weekly limit" line); Settings → Usage; chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage |
What to do when you see it
- Find out which window is full
In an active Codex CLI session type /status, or open Settings → Usage in the app. OpenAI's help center: "Check which allowance is exhausted, your credit balance, and any reset time shown." The "5h limit" and "Weekly limit" lines each carry their own reset time.
- Check for a banked reset
If the profile menu shows "1 reset available", redeeming a full banked reset "refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date". It is consumed only when it actually refreshes at least one window.
- Add credits, upgrade, or wait
Eligible Plus and Pro users can buy credits without changing plans; credits pay for additional usage and are not a reset. Otherwise the window refreshes at the time in the message.
- Report it if the numbers disagree
If /status or Settings → Usage still shows allowance in both windows, file an issue at github.com/openai/codex with the /status output (label rate-limits), or contact OpenAI Support with the reset time shown, a screenshot, the client and model, and your time zone.
When does it reset?
Your own window: the time after "try again at" is your account's refresh time for the window that ran out. The 5-hour window rolls five hours after the message that opened it; the weekly limit refreshes on your account's own weekly date. Paste that time into the window tracker to get a countdown and a calendar file.
Account-wide resets: OpenAI occasionally announces a reset for everyone; "An automatic reset is applied directly to the usage limits covered by the announcement." Those are the events on this board and on the Codex history page. They are not scheduled, so the board only shows the last one and a cadence estimate.

FAQ
Which window does "try again at" refer to?
The one that ran out. Codex tracks a 5-hour window and a weekly limit per account; the message does not say which, but /status prints a separate reset time next to "5h limit" and "Weekly limit". A time hours away is usually the 5-hour window; a date days away is the weekly limit.
I redeemed a banked reset and still see this message. Why?
That is the bug behind issue #34360: a Pro user at 99% remaining used a weekly reset and only got a new "try again at" timestamp. OpenAI says a banked reset "is consumed only when it successfully refreshes at least one eligible usage window", so check Settings → Usage for the updated reset time and report it if the reset was spent without refreshing anything.
Can OpenAI Support reset my usage limit?
No. The help center is explicit: "OpenAI Support does not reset ChatGPT or Codex usage limits. If you reach a limit, wait until it resets or use another available option shown in your account." Support does investigate if your usage was counted incorrectly or access has not returned after the stated reset time.
Does an account-wide Codex reset clear this message?
When OpenAI announces one, yes: an automatic reset "is applied directly to the usage limits covered by the announcement" and does not need to be redeemed. The board row above shows whether such a reset happened in the last 24 hours; it cannot predict the next one.
