This is the Plus-plan variant of the Codex limit notice, seen in the VS Code extension: instead of a generic "upgrade your plan" it offers the two paid routes OpenAI gives Plus users, upgrading to Pro or buying credits on the usage page, and the "try again at" time is when the exhausted window refreshes.
The source report (openai/codex issue #12299, 2026-02-20, extension 0.4.76 on Linux) was filed with a "try again at Feb 23rd, 2026 9:01 PM" timestamp three days out, which points at the weekly limit, and the reporter still had 10% of the weekly allowance showing when it appeared.
OpenAI describes the same options in its help center: "You may be able to add credits, use an available reset, upgrade, or wait until the displayed reset time. Eligible Plus and Pro users can buy credits without changing plans." Credits are extra usage under their own terms; "A reset is not cash or API credit."

- Open the usage page
Go to https://chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage (the URL in the message) or, in a CLI session, type /status. Both show the 5-hour and weekly bars with their reset times; the help center says to "Check which allowance is exhausted, your credit balance, and any reset time shown."
- Decide between credits, Pro, a reset, or waiting
Buying credits keeps your Plus plan and pays for additional usage. Upgrading to Pro raises the included allowance. A banked reset, if you have one, refreshes both windows. Waiting costs nothing: the window refreshes at the time in the message.
- Report a mismatch
If the usage page still shows remaining allowance, as in issue #12299 at 10% weekly, file an issue at github.com/openai/codex with a screenshot, or contact OpenAI Support with the reset time shown, the client and model, and your time zone.
When does it reset?
Your own window: the "try again at" time is your account's refresh for the window that ran out. A date days away is the weekly limit; a time within a few hours is the 5-hour window. Paste it into the window tracker for a countdown and a calendar file.
Account-wide resets: OpenAI occasionally announces a reset for everyone, applied automatically to "the usage limits covered by the announcement". The board row above shows the last one on record; the Codex history page lists every announcement with its original post. They are not scheduled and cannot be predicted from this message.

FAQ
Is buying credits the same as a reset?
No. OpenAI's help center: "Credits pay for eligible additional usage under their own terms. A reset is not cash or API credit." Credits let you keep working past the limit; a reset refreshes the windows themselves.
Can I buy a reset instead of credits?
OpenAI says "Purchased instant resets are available to eligible personal ChatGPT Plus and Pro accounts, depending on your account and billing country." A purchased reset refreshes both windows as soon as checkout succeeds and cannot be saved for later; the help center does not publish a price.
Why did it fire with 10% of my weekly allowance left?
That is what issue #12299 reports, and OpenAI has not published how the cut-off is computed. If your usage page still shows allowance, report it; the help center asks you to include the reset time shown, a screenshot, the Codex client and model, and your time zone.
Does Pro have the same windows?
Pro keeps the weekly limit, but on 2026-08-25 Tibo Sottiaux said the 5-hour limit is "not enabled for Pro $100 and Pro $200 subscriptions" for the upcoming months, while it came back for Plus. OpenAI publishes five-hour estimates per plan but no weekly figures.
