Is there a /limit-reset command in Claude Code? No: here is what actually exists

by vortwangUpdated

No. The official Claude Code command table, read on 2026-09-18, lists no /limit-reset, and the changelog up to 2.1.276 never mentions one; a third-party blog is the source of the claim. No command resets a usage limit: the session limit 'will reset every five hours' and the weekly limit at a fixed weekly time. What exists is /usage to see the bars, /usage-credits to buy or request more usage, and /rate-limit-options to wait and continue automatically, add credits, or upgrade.

What the official docs say

How it is counted

What the command table lists. /usage: 'Show session cost, plan usage limits, and activity stats', with /cost and /stats as aliases. /usage-credits: 'Configure usage credits, or request them from your admin, when you hit a limit', previously /extra-usage. /rate-limit-options: 'Show ways to keep working when a claude.ai usage limit blocks a request: wait and continue automatically when the limit resets, add usage credits, or upgrade your plan'; it 'Doesn't appear in the command menu; type it in full'. /status opens the Status tab with version, model, account and connectivity.

What does not exist. grep for 'limit-reset' in the official CHANGELOG.md (2.1.276 and earlier) returns nothing, and the command table has no such row. The claim appears on a third-party blog ranking for the phrase; nothing on code.claude.com backs it. If a command you found online is not in the table, Claude Code will answer with its closest match suggestion, not a reset.

How limits actually refresh. The Max plan article: 'Your session-based usage limit will reset every five hours' and 'The weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account.' The only things that refresh a limit early are Anthropic's own account-wide resets, which this board records, and usage credits, which let you keep working without moving the clock.

FAQ

How do I reset my Claude Code usage limit?

You cannot. The session limit resets on its own every five hours and the weekly limit at a fixed time each week assigned to your account. To keep working now, /usage-credits buys or requests more usage, /model moves to another model family when an Opus or Sonnet limit is what blocked you, and /rate-limit-options waits and continues automatically.

What replaced /extra-usage?

/usage-credits. The command table says it opens your usage-credits billing settings in the browser, or on Team and Enterprise without billing access sends a request to your admin from the CLI, and notes 'Previously /extra-usage'.

Why does /rate-limit-options not show in the menu?

By design. The table says it 'Doesn't appear in the command menu; type it in full.' It requires a claude.ai subscription, and the wait-and-continue rows require Claude Code v2.1.234 or later.

Does an account-wide reset count as a command?

No. Those are done by Anthropic for everyone and announced on accounts such as @ClaudeDevs; nothing you type triggers one. This board records each one with its post, and the estimate on the board is the last reset plus the median gap, not a promise.
