How to check your remaining Claude Code usage with /usage
Updated
Run /usage inside Claude Code. The official docs say Pro and Max subscribers "see plan usage bars, activity stats, and a usage breakdown on the same screen." The same limits appear at Settings > Usage on claude.ai, which shows "How much of your plan's five-hour session limit you've used thus far, plus the amount of time remaining in the session." Anthropic's help center also names /status for monitoring your remaining allocation.
What the official docs say
Subscribers see plan usage bars, activity stats, and a usage breakdown on the same screen.

Steps
Claude Code meters Pro and Max usage against the same pool as claude.ai: "all activity in both tools counts against the same usage limits." /usage is the in-terminal view of that pool, and the session bar it shows is the one that "will reset every five hours."
On a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan, /usage also shows a breakdown of what counts against your plan limits, with recent usage attributed to skills, subagents, plugins and individual MCP servers. That tells you what drained the window, not only how much is left.
The web view at Settings > Usage lists the five-hour session used so far with time remaining, and lets you "Check when your plan's weekly usage limit resets for Opus only and all other models." The weekly limit "resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account." Anthropic does not publish message counts.
- Open Claude Code
Start Claude Code in your project. Slash commands are typed at the Claude Code prompt inside the session.
- Type /usage
On a subscription plan the screen shows plan usage bars, activity stats and a usage breakdown together. The docs: "Subscribers see plan usage bars, activity stats, and a usage breakdown on the same screen."
- Read the session and weekly bars
The session bar is the five-hour limit; the weekly bar is the cap across all models. Each reset time is your own account clock: the session "will reset every five hours", the weekly limit "resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account."
- Read the attribution
The breakdown shows "what counts against your plan limits", attributed to skills, subagents, plugins and individual MCP servers. It also flags long context or cache misses when they account for 10% or more of recent usage.
- Cross-check at Settings > Usage on claude.ai
The web page shows how much of the five-hour session you have used and the time remaining, plus when the weekly limit resets for Opus only and for all other models. Web, desktop and Claude Code all draw from the same pool.
- Or use /status
Anthropic's help center for Pro and Max says to "Monitor your remaining allocation using the /status command". Both /usage (Claude Code docs) and /status (help center) are official; use whichever your version shows.
- Put the reset time on a countdown
Paste the session or weekly reset time into the window tracker on this site for a countdown and a calendar file. An account-wide reset announced by Anthropic is a separate event and shows on the board.
FAQ
Does chatting on claude.ai count against Claude Code?
Yes. "Both Pro and Max plans offer usage limits that are shared across Claude and Claude Code, meaning all activity in both tools counts against the same usage limits." The help center adds that claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all count "towards the same usage limit."
Why is there a separate Opus bar?
Settings > Usage shows when the weekly limit resets "for Opus only and all other models." Claude Code's error reference has a matching message, "You've hit your Opus limit", which applies only to that model family; switching to a model outside the family with /model keeps you working.
Do usage credits move my reset time?
No. "Your plan's included usage limit will reset every five hours once you reach it. Usage credits don't affect this reset timing."
How many messages do I get per session?
Anthropic does not publish a count. The Pro plan page says the number "will vary based on message length ... the length of your current conversation, and the model or feature you use." Max 5x and 20x are described as five and twenty times the Pro per-session allowance, with no absolute number.
