How to check your remaining Codex usage with /status and /usage

Type /status inside an active Codex CLI session. OpenAI's pricing page says "If you want to see your remaining limits during an active Codex CLI session, you can use /status." The output shows a "5h limit" bar and a "Weekly limit" bar, each with a percentage left and a reset time. /usage opens the usage menu for token activity or an earned reset. On web and in the desktop app, open Settings → Usage.

Codex has two slash commands that touch usage. The official command reference describes /status as "Display session configuration and token usage" and /usage as "View account token usage or use a rate-limit reset." Both are typed at the Codex prompt inside the interactive session, not as arguments on your shell command line.

The /status box prints one bar per window. A user-posted example in the official Codex repository (issue #29948) reads "5h limit: [████████████████░░░░] 82% left (resets 22:41)" and "Weekly limit: [███████████████████░] 97% left (resets 17:41 on 1 Jul)". The time after "resets" is your own window clock, not an account-wide reset.

Outside the CLI, OpenAI's help center says to "Check Settings → Usage before a large task to see your remaining allowance, usage windows and reset times." The published per-plan message estimates "are not fixed message limits; check your usage dashboard for current limits and reset times." Weekly numbers are not published at all.

  1. Open an active Codex session

    Start Codex in your project and wait for the prompt. Slash commands such as /status work inside the interactive session (the TUI); the official command reference lists them under the CLI's developer commands.

  2. Type /status

    Enter /status at the Codex prompt. The box shows session configuration and token usage, including the rate-limit bars for your account. OpenAI's help center: "In an active Codex CLI session, enter /status."

  3. Read the "5h limit" line

    The first bar shows the percentage left in your 5-hour window and the time it refreshes, for example "82% left (resets 22:41)". That time is your own window; it is not a Codex-wide reset.

  4. Read the "Weekly limit" line

    The second bar shows what remains of the weekly window and when it refreshes, for example "97% left (resets 17:41 on 1 Jul)". OpenAI publishes no weekly number, so this bar is the only figure you get.

  5. Type /usage for token activity

    /usage opens the usage menu: "Choose whether to show token activity or redeem an available earned reset." Token activity can be inspected daily, weekly or cumulatively from inside the TUI.

  6. Check outside the CLI

    In the ChatGPT desktop app or on web, open Settings → Usage to see remaining allowance, usage windows and reset times. Local messages and cloud chats share your plan's usage allowance, so the numbers are the same pool.

  7. Put the reset time on a countdown

    Paste the time after "resets" into the window tracker on this site for a countdown and a calendar file. An account-wide reset is a separate event: it is announced by OpenAI and shown on the board, not in /status.

FAQ

Do I run "codex /status" from the shell?

No. /status is a slash command typed at the Codex prompt inside a running session. The official command reference lists it among the interactive CLI's developer commands, together with /usage and /logout.

Why does the 5-hour bar show a reset time while I still have weekly usage?

The two windows run on separate clocks. OpenAI's help center: "You may reach the five-hour limit before five hours have passed, even if you still have weekly usage remaining." Where both apply, you need allowance remaining in both to continue.

Is the "resets" time in /status the same as a reset on this board?

No. The time in /status is your personal window. The board tracks account-wide resets announced by OpenAI, such as the global reset documented for 2026-09-07, which "won't appear as a saved reset in Settings" and applies to everyone at once.

The dashboard did not change after a reset. Is something wrong?

OpenAI's help center: "Your usage dashboard may take a short time to update. If the percentage does not change immediately, refresh or reopen Settings → Usage". If it still shows no change, check which window the reset was supposed to refresh.

Does /status still show a 5h limit on Pro?

Tibo Sottiaux said on 2026-08-25 that OpenAI is "keeping the 5h limit not enabled for Pro $100 and Pro $200 subscriptions" for the upcoming months, while the 5h limit returned for Plus. How the /status box renders a disabled window is not documented; read your own output.
