How to redeem a Codex banked reset with /usage or Settings → Usage
Updated
Open Settings → Usage in the ChatGPT desktop app, on web or on mobile, or type /usage in the Codex CLI and choose to redeem an earned reset. Select the usage summary showing "1 reset available" or "Full reset", review the expiration, then confirm. OpenAI's help center says a full banked reset "refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date." Banked resets are usable for 30 days after they are granted.

Steps
A banked reset is "a one-time Codex usage-limit reset saved to your account until you use it or it expires. It is not purchased credit and does not permanently increase your plan's usage limit." OpenAI Support adds that banked resets "aren't something you can normally purchase"; they arrive through promotions such as launch rewards or referrals.
Redemption is manual. A banked reset "must be applied by you", whereas an automatic or global reset "won't appear as a saved reset in Settings." The reset "is consumed only when it successfully refreshes at least one eligible usage window. If there is nothing to reset, it remains available."
Timing matters. The pricing page says "Banked rate-limit resets are usable for 30 days after they're granted", and the help center warns "Once an unused reset expires, it cannot be restored or reissued." Redeeming from web and mobile was added on 2026-07-12; before that only the desktop app could do it.
- Confirm you have one
The usage summary in Settings → Usage shows "1 reset available" or "Full reset" when a banked reset is waiting. In the desktop app a banner may read "You have a new rate limit reset available — You were granted a rate limit reset that will expire in 30 days."
- Decide whether to use it now
A reset is consumed only when it refreshes at least one eligible window; if there is nothing to reset, it stays available. But it expires: "Check the expiration shown in your account or offer."
- Open the redeem menu
Desktop app, web or mobile: open Settings → Usage. Codex CLI: type /usage to open the usage menu and choose to redeem an available earned reset. OpenAI's wording: "Open settings → usage on the desktop app, CLI, or on web".
- Select the reset
Pick the usage summary showing an available reset, such as "1 reset available" or "Full reset."
- Review the expiration, then confirm
"Review the expiration details, then confirm that you want to use it." A full reset refreshes both the 5-hour and weekly windows at once.
- Verify in Settings → Usage
"Check Settings → Usage for your updated reset time." The dashboard "may take a short time to update. If the percentage does not change immediately, refresh or reopen Settings → Usage".
- Note your new weekly date
A full banked reset "changes your weekly reset date." Tibo Sottiaux on 2026-07-13: "You can apply the reset in the desktop app or on web and it will replenish the weekly usage for you."
FAQ
Can I buy a banked reset?
No. OpenAI Support: "Banked resets are promotional Codex rate-limit resets, they aren't something you can normally purchase." A purchased instant reset is a different product that applies at checkout and "cannot be saved for later."
Does an official global reset use up my banked reset?
No. "An automatic or global reset refreshes the eligible usage limits specified in the announcement. You don't need to apply it yourself, and it won't appear as a saved reset in Settings." Your banked reset stays until you use it or it expires.
Can I hold more than one banked reset?
Yes. Tibo Sottiaux noted on 2026-06-28 that "some users had stacked up to three banked resets already that they can apply on their own schedule." Each has its own expiration shown in your account.
A reset was announced but nothing shows in my account. What now?
Eligibility and any qualifying cutoff depend on the specific offer. OpenAI says support can review eligibility, but "Reporting an issue alone does not qualify you for an additional reset or compensation", and "Individual access issues after launch do not qualify you for an additional reset."
