"You've hit your monthly spend limit · raise it at claude.ai/settings/usage"
by vortwangUpdated
"You've hit your monthly spend limit · raise it at claude.ai/settings/usage" means two things ran out at once: your plan's included usage "can't cover this request", and the usage credits that would pay for it "have reached a spend limit". The text after the · says who can raise it, and since v2.1.239 the message also names when your plan window resets, for example "· your session limit resets 3:45pm". It is not the account-wide reset this board tracks.

What does "You've hit your monthly spend limit · raise it at claude.ai/settings/usage" mean?
The Error reference explains the trigger: "Your plan's included usage can't cover this request, and the usage credits that would otherwise pay for it have reached a spend limit." That happens when one of your plan's windows has run out, or when the request is one that only usage credits pay for, such as a model that bills to usage credits.
The message names whose limit blocked you. The docs list five variants: "monthly spend limit" (Pro and Max, raise it yourself), "individual spend limit" (ask your admin), "org's monthly spend limit" (Admin settings > Usage), "team's shared budget" (a pooled budget an admin assigned to a group you belong to), and "channel's monthly spend limit" (the one Slack channel the session runs in). On organizations with usage-based billing the message says "usage limit" in place of "spend limit", as in "You've hit your individual usage limit".
When a plan window is what ran out, "the message also says when that window resets, for example · your session limit resets 3:45pm, and access returns then without anyone raising the limit". Before v2.1.239 the message did not name that time; before v2.1.268 a group's pooled budget produced the "individual spend limit" wording instead of "team's shared budget". A lowercase "spend limit reached" is a different thing: a Claude apps gateway cap set by your operator.
Which window is full?
| Window | Resets | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly spend limit (Pro / Max usage credits) | Monthly cap on usage credits; raise it in Settings > Usage or with /usage-credits | claude.ai/settings/usage; /usage shows a usage-credits row while credits are on |
| Individual spend limit / team's shared budget / org's monthly spend limit (Team, Enterprise) | Set by an admin; raise it in Admin settings > Usage, or /usage-credits sends the request to your admin | claude.ai/admin-settings/usage if you manage billing; otherwise ask an admin |
| Channel's monthly spend limit (Slack channel session) | The budget of that one channel; an org owner or channel manager can raise it in the channel's Claude settings | The channel's Claude settings on claude.ai |
| Session limit (5-hour) | Every five hours; the exact time is the one in the message | /usage in Claude Code, or Settings > Usage on claude.ai |
| Weekly limit | At a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account | /usage in Claude Code, or Settings > Usage on claude.ai |
What to do when you see it
- Read the text after the ·
It says who can raise the limit: you (Pro and Max), your admin (individual, team or org), or an org owner or channel manager (channel). That tells you which of the next steps applies.
- On Pro and Max, raise it in Settings > Usage
The docs say to increase your monthly spend limit at claude.ai/settings/usage, or run /usage-credits, which opens the billing settings in your browser.
- On Team and Enterprise, ask or use Admin settings
Increase the limit in Admin settings > Usage if you manage billing, or ask an admin to. "/usage-credits sends that request to your admin for you".
- Or wait for the window named in the message
If the message carries "· your session limit resets 3:45pm" or a weekly reset time, access returns at that time without anyone raising the spend limit. /usage shows the same windows.
- Check it is not a gateway cap
A lowercase "spend limit reached (daily; resets …)" comes from a Claude apps gateway your operator runs, not from claude.ai billing. Wait for the period it names or ask the operator.
When does it reset?
Your own windows: the spend limit is a monthly cap on usage credits, raised in Settings > Usage; the plan windows behind it are the session limit (every five hours) and the weekly limit (a fixed weekly time assigned to your account). When the message names a reset time, that is the one to wait for; /usage shows the same clocks.
Account-wide resets: separately, Anthropic sometimes resets 5-hour and weekly limits for everyone. Those are what this board records, each linked to its original post, and the row above shows the last one. A global reset refreshes plan windows; it does not raise a spend limit.

FAQ
Is this the same as "You've hit your session limit"?
No. The session message means the plan window is full and you have no usage credits taking over. The spend-limit message means the window is full and your usage credits have also reached their cap, so nothing pays for the next request. Raising the spend limit or waiting for the window both restore access.
Why does the message say "team's shared budget"?
The docs define it as "a pooled budget an admin assigned to a group you belong to; the message doesn't name the group". Ask your admin to raise it at claude.ai/admin-settings/usage. Before v2.1.268 the same situation showed "individual spend limit" instead.
What does "individual usage limit" mean?
The same block, worded for organizations on usage-based billing: the docs say "the message says usage limit in place of spend limit, as in You've hit your individual usage limit". Ask your admin for a higher limit.
Does a global reset on the board clear a spend limit?
No. Account-wide resets refresh the 5-hour and weekly plan windows. A spend limit is a monthly cap on usage credits set in Settings > Usage or by an admin, and only raising it or the next monthly cycle changes it.
