"You've hit your limit · resets {time} ({Region/City})" is the Claude Code wording from early 2026 (v2.1.37 to v2.1.41 in the reports) that did not say whether the five-hour session or the weekly window was full. The time and IANA zone in the brackets are your own reset time; /usage tells you which window it is. Current versions split it into session, weekly, Opus and Sonnet messages. It is not the account-wide reset this board tracks.

What does "You've hit your limit · resets {time} ({Region/City})" mean?

In January and February 2026, Claude Code showed one generic limit message with a time and an IANA time zone in brackets, such as "resets 2pm (UTC)" or "resets 2am (Europe/Berlin)". Several issues with this exact title were opened in that period (#25607, #24428, #21111 among them).

The message did not say which window was full. In #25607 the reset time jumped from "10pm today" to seven days later while /usage showed 12%, which is what running into the weekly window looks like. In #24428 the underlying error was an API 429 rate_limit_error: "This request would exceed your account's rate limit. Please try again later."

The current Error reference no longer lists this form. It shows four messages instead: "You've hit your session limit", "You've hit your weekly limit", "You've hit your Opus limit" and "You've hit your Sonnet limit", so upgrading Claude Code tells you which window you hit.

What to do when you see it

  1. Run /usage

    It shows the session and weekly bars and when each resets. If the reset in the message is days away, it is the weekly window; if it is within five hours, it is the session window.

  2. Convert the time zone

    The zone in brackets is an IANA name such as Europe/Berlin or UTC. If it is not your local zone, convert the time before deciding how long to wait.

  3. Confirm which account is signed in

    If claude.ai still answers for the same account, run /status to see the active credential and /login to switch to the subscription you expect, as the help center describes.

  4. Update Claude Code

    Current versions replace this line with a message that names the window (session, weekly, Opus or Sonnet) and, since v2.1.234, can wait and continue automatically.

  5. Report it if the numbers disagree

    If /usage shows plenty of room and the block persists, open an issue on the anthropics/claude-code repository with the message and the /usage output.

When does it reset?

Your own window: the time in brackets is when your window refreshes. The session limit resets every five hours; the weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account. Put the time on a countdown with the window tracker linked below.

Account-wide resets: separately, Anthropic sometimes announces a reset for everyone. Those are what this board records, each linked to its original post, and the row above shows the last one. They are announced, not scheduled, so this site does not promise one.

Is "You've hit your limit" the session limit or the weekly limit?

The old wording did not say. Run /usage: it shows both bars and their reset times. A reset several days away means the weekly window; a reset within five hours means the session window. Current Claude Code versions name the window in the message itself.

Why did the reset time jump from tonight to next week?

That is what crossing into the weekly window looks like. Issue #25607 reported the time moving from "10pm today" to seven days later while /usage showed 12%. The weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account.

What is the error underneath?

In issue #24428 the API returned a 429 rate_limit_error with the text "This request would exceed your account's rate limit. Please try again later." The Claude Platform error reference lists 429 rate_limit_error as the code for hitting a rate limit.

Does the time zone in brackets change the reset?

No, it only tells you how to read the time. Claude Code prints the IANA zone it used, for example (UTC) or (Africa/Libreville). Convert to your local zone; the underlying reset moment is the same.
