"Approaching weekly usage limit — Resets {Day}, {Mon D}, {H:MM PM}"

Updated

"Approaching weekly usage limit — Resets {Day}, {Mon D}, {H:MM PM}" is a warning banner above the Claude Code input, not a block: you can keep working. The Error reference describes the usual warning with a percentage, such as "You've used 85% of your session limit · resets 3:45pm". Issue #94694 reports the percentage-free banner at 54% of the weekly limit on CLI 2.1.271. The reset in the banner is your own weekly time; /usage shows the real number.

What does "Approaching weekly usage limit — Resets {Day}, {Mon D}, {H:MM PM}" mean?

Before a window runs out, Claude Code can warn you that you have used most of it. The Error reference gives the form "You've used 85% of your session limit · resets 3:45pm". The weekly banner above the prompt reads "Approaching weekly usage limit — Resets Sun, Sep 20, 2:00 PM" in issue #94694 and carries no percentage.

Issue #94694 (2026-09-16, CLI 2.1.271 and Desktop 2.110.0, Max 20x) reports the banner appearing at 54% of the weekly limit. The reporter's explanation, that the server sends a threshold flag without a utilization value, is their reading of the client code, not an official statement; the issue is labeled as a duplicate.

The date and time after "Resets" are your own weekly reset: Anthropic says the weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account. The banner is not the account-wide reset this board tracks.

What to do when you see it

  1. Keep working

The banner is a warning. Requests are blocked only when you see "You've hit your weekly limit"; until then nothing has changed.

  2. Check the real percentage

Run /usage, or in the Desktop app click the usage ring next to the model picker. Issue #94694 saw the banner at 54%, so the banner alone does not tell you how close you are.

  3. Watch it continuously if you prefer

The Error reference suggests adding the rate_limits fields to a custom status line to see remaining allowance without banners.

  4. Plan around the reset time

The time after "Resets" is fixed for your account each week. If a large fanout is coming, remember usage counts against the session and weekly allowances at the same time.

When does it reset?

Your own window: the banner's "Resets" time is when your weekly allowance refreshes, at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account. Settings > Usage on claude.ai shows the same reset separately for Opus and for all other models. Put it on a countdown with the window tracker linked below.

Account-wide resets: separately, Anthropic sometimes announces a reset for everyone. Those are what this board records, each linked to its original post, and the row above shows the last one. They are announced, not scheduled, so this site does not promise one.

FAQ

Does the banner mean I am blocked?

No. It is a warning that you are approaching the weekly limit. Claude Code blocks requests only when the window is actually used up, which shows as "You've hit your weekly limit · resets …". Until then you can keep sending prompts.

Why did it appear at 54%?

Issue #94694 reports exactly that on CLI 2.1.271 and Desktop 2.110.0. The reporter attributes it to a threshold flag sent without a utilization value, but that is their reading of the client code, not an official explanation. Run /usage for the real number.

How is this different from "You've used 85% of your session limit"?

That is the form the Error reference documents: a percentage plus the reset time for the session window. The weekly banner in #94694 has the same purpose for the weekly window but shows no percentage, only the reset date and time.

Can I hide the banner?

The Error reference describes the warning and points to the rate_limits status-line fields and the Desktop usage ring for watching usage; it does not describe a setting to hide the banner. Issue #94694 is the place to follow that request.
