Codex credits vs instant reset vs banked reset: which one keeps you working?

Four things can keep you working after a Codex limit, and they are not interchangeable. Credits are 'a pay-as-you-go add-on' billed after plan limits; a purchased instant reset 'immediately restores both 5-hour and weekly usage' and changes your weekly reset schedule; a banked reset is 'a one-time Codex usage-limit reset saved to your account until you use it or it expires'; Luna Reserve is 'a fallback mode, not a separate model you need to buy'. How it is counted

Credits and resets answer different questions. Credits: 'Your plan's included usage is used first. After you hit plan limits, usage draws from your credit balance.' They are bought from 'Codex Settings > Usage > Credits on both web and the Codex app', are 'valid for 12 months from purchase', and do not touch your windows. A purchased instant reset does the opposite: it 'pulls your normal weekly allowance forward rather than adding a separate usage entitlement', applies at once, 'cannot be saved for later', and sets your next automatic weekly reset '7 days after that first request'. Eligibility for purchased resets is limited to 'eligible ChatGPT Plus and Pro personal accounts'; 'It is not available on Free, Go, Business, Enterprise, or Edu plans.'

A banked reset is the free one. It is saved to your account, 'must be applied by you', and 'is consumed only when it successfully refreshes at least one eligible usage window'. Redeem it from Settings → Usage or with /usage in the CLI ('View account token usage or use a rate-limit reset'). It expires: 'Once an unused reset expires, it cannot be restored or reissued.' Banked resets 'are promotional benefits' and 'Future resets are not guaranteed.'

Luna Reserve is not a reset at all. It 'gives selected accounts additional usage with GPT-5.6 Luna after regular usage is exhausted', is 'available to selected personal ChatGPT Plus and Pro accounts', and 'doesn't restore regular usage or unlock our most capable models'. Look for 'a moon indicator in the usage warning'. Users reported the Codex CLI could not draw on it (issue #40939); the help center names the desktop app and web. OpenAI publishes no price for a reset or a credit pack on the help pages cited here; you see the price in checkout, and this site does not repeat third-party numbers.

If I have credits, do they get used before my banked reset?

Credits are drawn on automatically after plan limits are reached: 'After you hit plan limits, usage draws from your credit balance.' A banked reset is never applied automatically; it 'must be applied by you'. So with both on the account, credits start paying as soon as you cross a limit unless you redeem the reset first.

Is a purchased instant reset the same as a banked reset?

No. The help center says an instant reset 'does not add to your credit balance or give you a banked reset to use later', and it 'cannot be banked or scheduled for later'. A banked reset waits until you redeem it; a purchased reset applies at checkout and moves your weekly reset schedule.

How much does a Codex instant reset or credit pack cost?
