What is a signal?

A signal is an official post about usage limits from an account this board watches, filed as one of five kinds: reset, banked, boost, promo or tease. Only a reset moves LAST RESET; a banked reset or a tease changes the STATUS word for 72 hours. Every signal links to its original post, for example @bot's 2026-08-26 "We're also resetting weekly usage limits for all users." Alerts fire on signals, and teases are marked unconfirmed.

Definition
A signal is the unit this site records. It is an official statement, usually an X post from a vendor account or a help-center change, that says something about usage limits for many accounts. Each signal is stored with the announcing account, the announcement time in UTC, its scope (everyone or a plan), a short excerpt and the link to the original post. Rows not yet checked against the original carry the label "unverified".
There are five kinds. reset: an account-wide refresh, such as the Codex global reset OpenAI documents for 2026-09-07, applied immediately and not banked. banked: a card drop you redeem yourself, such as the one Tibo Sottiaux described on 2026-07-13: "You can apply the reset in the desktop app or on web and it will replenish the weekly usage for you." boost: a limit raised. promo: a temporary promotion. tease: a reset hinted at but not yet in effect.
What is not a signal: your own 5-hour window or weekly limit refreshing, an error message on your screen, or a rule change without a reset. Tibo Sottiaux's 2026-08-25 post about bringing back the 5h limit for Plus is a rule change; it belongs on the limits page, not on the board. OpenAI's help center draws the same line for its own resets: "An automatic or global reset refreshes the eligible usage limits specified in the announcement."
On the board, the STATUS flap is derived from the latest signals: RESET NOW when a reset was announced in the last 24 hours; BANKED or TEASE when the latest signal is a banked drop or a tease from the last 72 hours; WAITING when nothing new has happened since the last reset; OVERDUE when the wait has passed 1.5 times the median gap of the last 10 resets; NO DATA when nothing is recorded. Alerts: email and browser push go out for reset, banked and tease signals, with teases marked unconfirmed; SMS goes out for reset and banked, and a phone call only for a confirmed reset.
Where you’ll see it on the board
The STATUS column on the departures board uses five words. Each one is a fixed rule of this site, computed from the announcements on record, not a promise about the next reset.

FAQ
Is a tease a reset?
No. A tease is an official hint that a reset is coming, not yet in effect. The board shows TEASE for 72 hours, LAST RESET does not move, and the free email and push alerts for it carry an "unconfirmed" label. SMS and phone calls are reserved for confirmed signals.
Why does the board say WAITING when I was just rate-limited?
Because your own window is not a signal. WAITING means no vendor has announced anything since the last account-wide reset. Your 5-hour window and weekly limit refresh on your own clock; check them with /status, /usage or Settings → Usage, and use the window tracker for a countdown.
What does "unverified" mean on a row?
The row was ingested from a watched account but has not yet been checked by hand against the original post. It still links to the source so you can read it yourself; the flag clears once the excerpt, time and scope have been confirmed.
Where do signals come from?
From the official accounts this board watches: @thsottiaux for Codex; @ClaudeDevs and @lydiahallie for Claude; @grok, @bot and @elonmusk for Grok; and from vendor help pages when they document a reset, such as OpenAI's entry for the 2026-09-07 global reset. The public status API and RSS feed expose the same records.
