"5-hour limit reached - resets {time}."

Updated

"5-hour limit reached - resets {time}." is the blocking message in the Claude web and desktop apps when your five-hour session allowance is used up; the help center lists it after the warning "Approaching 5-hour limit." Anthropic says the session limit resets every five hours, and the time in the message is your own clock: Settings > Usage shows it. With usage credits on, the message changes to "continuing with usage credits". It is not an account-wide reset.

What does "5-hour limit reached - resets {time}." mean?

Anthropic's "Troubleshoot Claude error messages" article describes three usage-limit messages in the Claude apps. As you approach the limit within a five-hour session you see "Approaching 5-hour limit."; if you hit it, a blocking message tells you when you can use Claude again: "5-hour limit reached - resets [time]."

Paid users with usage credits enabled in Usage settings see a different message instead, "5-hour limit resets [time] - continuing with usage credits.", and are not blocked. The help center notes this appears only for members with access to usage credits.

The window is the same one Claude Code uses: usage of all Claude surfaces (claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Desktop) counts toward the same usage limit, the session limit resets every five hours, and Pro and Max also have a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account.

WindowResetsWhere to check
Session limit (5-hour)Every five hours; the exact time is the one in the messageSettings > Usage on claude.ai (session used and time remaining)
Weekly limitAt a fixed time each week that is assigned to your accountSettings > Usage on claude.ai (weekly bar, with a separate bar for Opus)

What to do when you see it

  1. Read the time in the message

That is when your five-hour session allowance refreshes. It is your own clock, not a site-wide event.

  2. Open Settings > Usage

Anthropic's usage-limit article says it shows how much of the five-hour session limit you have used, the time remaining in the session, and when the weekly limit resets.

  3. Turn on usage credits to keep going

With usage credits enabled, the message becomes "5-hour limit resets [time] - continuing with usage credits." and you are not blocked. Credits do not change the reset timing.

  4. Upgrade for more allowance

Max 5x and Max 20x include five and twenty times the Pro per-session allowance.

When does it reset?

Your own window: the help center states that your session-based usage limit will reset every five hours, and that usage credits do not affect this reset timing. The time in the message is that moment; put it on a countdown with the window tracker linked below.

Account-wide resets: separately, Anthropic sometimes announces a reset for everyone. Those are what this board records, each linked to its original post, and the row above shows the last one. They are announced, not scheduled, so this site does not promise one.

FAQ

What is the difference between "Approaching 5-hour limit." and "5-hour limit reached"?

The first is a warning shown as you near your plan's limit within a five-hour session; you can keep chatting. The second is the blocking message that tells you when you can use Claude again. Both come from the same help-center article.

Why does it say "continuing with usage credits" instead?

Because usage credits are enabled in your Usage settings. The help center says paid users with usage credits see "5-hour limit resets [time] - continuing with usage credits." and that it appears only for members with access to usage credits.

Does using Claude Code count against the same limit?

Yes. The help center says usage of all Claude product surfaces, claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop, counts toward the same usage limit, so heavy Claude Code use can trigger this message in the app.

Is there also a weekly limit?

Yes on Pro and Max. It applies across all models and resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account. Settings > Usage shows when it resets for Opus only and for all other models.
