Does web search count toward the Claude and Codex usage limits?

Updated

Yes. Anthropic states it outright: 'Usage of web search and web fetch counts toward your usage limits', and warns that fetching a long article uses far more than a search query. OpenAI does not name web search but says Codex usage depends on 'tools' alongside model, context and reasoning. xAI has not published a per-feature rule for Grok; it meters one weekly pool where 'Different products cost different amounts depending on how much compute that product requires'.

What the official docs say

How it is counted

Claude is explicit. The help center says 'Usage of web search and web fetch counts toward your usage limits.' Fetching is the expensive half: asking Claude to summarize a 10,000-word article via web fetch 'will use substantially more of your context window than a regular web search query'.

Codex counts tools without naming them. The help center says 'Usage depends on the model, where the task runs, task complexity, context, reasoning, speed, and tools.' Web search is a tool, so it draws on the same allowance, but OpenAI publishes no per-tool rate.

xAI has not published a per-feature rule. The Grok FAQ describes one weekly pool across products and says 'Different products cost different amounts depending on how much compute that product requires.' This site does not turn that into a web-search figure.

FAQ

Does web fetch cost more than web search on Claude?

Yes. The help center says summarizing a 10,000-word article via web fetch 'will use substantially more of your context window than a regular web search query'. Both count toward your usage limits.

Does OpenAI say web search counts for Codex?

Not by name. The help center says 'Usage depends on the model, where the task runs, task complexity, context, reasoning, speed, and tools.' Web search is one of those tools; OpenAI has not published a separate rate for it.

Does Grok charge web search separately?

xAI has not published a per-feature rule. The Grok FAQ says 'Different products cost different amounts depending on how much compute that product requires', and that usage is drawn from one weekly pool shown in the Usage tab in Settings.

Where do I see the effect on my own limit?

Run /usage in Claude Code, /status in the Codex CLI, or open the Usage tab in Grok Settings. These are your per-account windows; the resets on the DidReset board are account-wide announcements and do not change how tools are counted.
