Does upgrading an older account to Pro grant past Codex banked resets?

Updated

OpenAI has not published this. The help center says 'Banked resets are promotional benefits. Eligibility and any qualifying cutoff depend on the specific offer or announcement' and 'Future resets are not guaranteed.' Each drop had its own cutoff: existing paid users in good standing received one on both September 3 and September 4, 2026, and Tibo Sottiaux wrote 'If you create the account or upgrade before 8pm PT you will get it too.' Nothing documents a past drop as retroactive.

What the official docs say

How it is counted

There is no published rule that an upgrade back-issues earlier resets. The help center's position is per offer: 'Banked resets are promotional benefits. Eligibility and any qualifying cutoff depend on the specific offer or announcement.' It adds that eligibility may vary by plan, region, availability and whether your plan is new or existing, and that 'Future resets are not guaranteed.'

The GPT-6 Astra launch drops show how cutoffs work. Existing paid users 'in good standing received a banked reset both on September 3rd and September 4th', and new accounts qualified if created before 10 PM PT on September 3 or 8 PM PT on September 4, 2026. Tibo Sottiaux's post of 2026-09-05 00:39 UTC (the evening of September 4 Pacific time) said 'If you create the account or upgrade before 8pm PT you will get it too.' Upgrading before that cutoff counted for that drop only.

The help center also limits what a later request can do: 'The daily reset offers covered the broader Astra launch delay. Individual access issues after launch do not qualify you for an additional reset.' This site therefore treats past drops as not retroactive and labels the question 'not published' rather than guessing.

FAQ

If I upgrade to Pro today, do I get the September 2026 resets?

Nothing published says so. Those drops had explicit cutoffs (10 PM PT on September 3 and 8 PM PT on September 4, 2026), and the help center says eligibility depends on 'the specific offer or announcement'. An upgrade after a cutoff is not documented as qualifying for that drop.

Can support issue me a reset I missed?

The help center says 'Individual access issues after launch do not qualify you for an additional reset.' Eligibility is tied to the offer's own cutoff, not to a later request.

How do I know whether I already have a banked reset?

Open Settings → Usage in the ChatGPT desktop app or on web; a saved reset appears there as an option such as '1 reset available' or 'Full reset'. In the CLI, /usage opens the menu that lets you redeem an available reset.

Will there be more banked resets?

OpenAI does not promise them: 'Future resets are not guaranteed.' Each past drop came with its own announcement and cutoff. The DidReset board marks BANKED when the latest official signal is a reset card drop, so you see new ones as they are announced.
