What does "You've hit your usage limit. Upgrade for more usage. Get more credits on higher plans." mean?
This message comes from the Agent panel in the Cursor IDE. Cursor plans include monthly usage pools ("Cursor Models" and "Other Models"); when the included usage is gone, Cursor says "You'll see a notification in the editor. You can either enable on-demand usage (pay-as-you-go) or upgrade to a higher plan."
The source report (Cursor forum topic 144570, 2025-11-28, Cursor 2.1.39 on a $20 Pro plan) saw the message while running gpt-5-pro with only about 70% of the month's usage consumed and one day before the billing period ended; enabling on-demand usage let the request through. A Cursor ambassador (community group CursorAmbassadors, not Cursor staff) replied on 2025-12-01 that the plan had renewed on November 29 and "you should have access to all models now since the usage limit has reset!"
Cursor's meter is monthly and per billing cycle. It has no 5-hour or weekly window, and it is not connected to OpenAI's Codex resets: the board row on this page is shown because this site tracks Codex, not because a Codex reset changes Cursor's included usage.

Cursor's two documented ways forward: "Enable on-demand usage: Pay for additional requests at the same API rates" or "Upgrade your plan: Higher-tier plans include more usage". Cursor Models (Cursor Grok 4.6, Cursor Grok 4.5, Composer 2.5) draw from a separate pool that may still have room.

Included usage comes back on your billing date; the source report was blocked one day before renewal and had access again after it.

When does it reset?
Your own allowance: on your billing date, shown on the Spending tab. "Usage resets monthly with your billing cycle. Unused usage does not roll over." There is no shorter window to wait for; on-demand usage or an upgrade is the only way to continue before then.
Account-wide resets: the board row above is OpenAI's Codex, the product this site tracks. An official Codex reset refreshes Codex usage windows; it is a different meter from Cursor's monthly pools, and this site has no record of Cursor announcing account-wide resets.

FAQ
Why did it fire at 70% of my monthly usage?
The source thread does not resolve that. The reporter was running gpt-5-pro one day before the billing period ended; on-demand usage let the request through, and the ambassador only confirmed that the limit had reset after the November 29 renewal.
Does unused usage roll over to next month?
No. Cursor: "Usage resets monthly with your billing cycle. Unused usage does not roll over. The reset date is shown on the Spending tab." What you do not use in a billing period is simply gone when the next one starts.
Does the Codex board on this page have anything to do with Cursor's limit?
No. The board tracks OpenAI's account-wide Codex resets; Cursor meters its own monthly pools per billing cycle. The board is shown here because this site follows Codex, Claude Code and Grok, not because a Codex reset refreshes Cursor usage.
Do requests with my own API key count against the limit?
On individual plans, no: "Your provider bills you directly for the model cost, and those requests don't draw from either pool." On Teams and Enterprise plans they still carry the Cursor Token Rate of $0.25 per million tokens under Other Models.
